A filter press is a mechanical filtration device used to separate solids from liquids, typically in industries like food processing, chemical production, water treatment, and oil extraction. The machine works by applying pressure to a slurry (a mixture of liquid and solid particles) and forcing the liquid through a filter medium, leaving the solid particles behind.
The filter press consists of a series of plates, each covered with a filter cloth. These plates are arranged in a frame, creating chambers where the slurry is pumped in. When the machine operates, hydraulic or mechanical pressure is applied to the plates, compacting the filter cloth and ensuring that the liquid passes through the filter, while the solids are trapped in the chambers. The separated liquid, now clarified, flows out through drainage channels, while the solid residue, often called "cake," accumulates inside the chambers.
In the context of oil extraction, a filter press is often used to purify the oil after the initial extraction process. After oil is squeezed out of seeds (such as in a screw press or hydraulic press), the oil may still contain impurities or small solid particles. The filter press helps remove these, ensuring that the final oil product is clear, clean, and of high quality.
Filter presses are known for their high filtration efficiency, ability to handle large volumes, and capability to filter a wide range of materials. They are especially valuable in applications where clarity and purity of the liquid are essential, and the separation of solid and liquid phases needs to be done efficiently and cost-effectively.
