A kolhu is a traditional mechanical oil press used primarily in rural areas for extracting oil from various seeds like mustard, sesame, groundnut, and sunflower. The device operates using a simple yet effective manual or animal-powered mechanism, making it ideal for small-scale, local oil extraction.
The kolhu consists of a circular wooden or metal drum, where the oilseeds are placed. A heavy wooden or metal pestle is then used to crush and press the seeds. The pestle is usually moved by a rotating axle, which is powered either manually (by hand) or by an animal (like a bull or a horse). As the seeds are crushed, oil is extracted and flows out through a spout, while the remaining cake is collected separately.
The kolhu is an efficient and low-cost alternative to modern mechanical oil presses, and it’s especially popular in rural areas due to its simplicity and reliance on minimal technology. It also allows for the extraction of cold-pressed oils, which are valued for retaining more nutrients, flavor, and aroma. Although the kolhu is less common in large-scale commercial production today, it remains a popular tool for artisanal and small-scale oil makers.
